Shipping building materials from China to Oman
Tiles, sanitary ware and steel fittings from Foshan and Guangzhou ship from Nansha to Sohar, typically 16–28 days door to door; Sohar lies outside the Strait of Hormuz, so as of November 2026 the closure does not block the route. Oman charges 5% customs duty on the CIF value plus 5% VAT, and Chinese ceramic and porcelain tiles also carry GCC anti-dumping duty. These goods are heavy, so a 20GP is usually the right container.
At a glance
How it works
- Order and supplier checkWe check the supplier, invoice and packing list, including the weight of every pallet.
- Pickup and inspectionGoods come to our Guangzhou warehouse, where pallets are counted, photographed and checked for breakage.
- Loading and export at NanshaHeavy pallets are spread and secured, export is declared and the box sails from Nansha.
- Sea leg to SoharThe vessel discharges at Sohar, outside Hormuz; the shipping agent files the manifest in Bayan at least 36 hours before arrival.
- Oman customs in BayanThe broker files the declaration with the invoice, packing list, B/L, certificate of origin and any conformity certificate.
- Delivery to Muscat or siteThe container is trucked to your yard or project, about 2 hours to Muscat.
Heavy cargo: weight runs out before space
Tiles, slabs and steel reach the container's weight limit long before it is full. A 20GP has about 33 CBM of nominal space but a typical payload of roughly 25–28 tonnes, and a 40ft carries little more weight, so dense loads usually go in 20ft boxes. Road weight limits can cap a load further, so we check the whole chain. Pallets must be spread evenly, with the centre of gravity near the middle of the box and gaps filled with dunnage or airbags. Large slabs travel upright on fixed A-frames, and solid wood crates and pallets need ISPM 15 treatment and the IPPC mark.
Tiles, sanitary ware and steel fittings
Chinese ceramic and porcelain tiles under HS heading 6907 pay GCC anti-dumping duty on top of the 5% customs duty; Oman has applied it at all customs points since 29 May 2025, for five years. The rate is a percentage of CIF value set per exporter, so ask us to check your supplier first. Sanitary ware is bulky and fragile rather than heavy: each piece needs its own carton with foam or thick cardboard inserts. Steel fittings and long products must fit the box: a 20GP is 5.90 m long inside and a 40GP 12.03 m. Longer pieces need an open top or flat rack, which several carriers stopped accepting for many Gulf ports in 2026.
Oman customs, conformity and duty
Oman applies the GCC Common Customs Law: 5% duty on the CIF value, then 5% VAT on CIF plus duty, with VAT deferment for eligible registered importers. The importer needs an Omani commercial registration and a Bayan importer registration, and a licensed broker files the declaration. Product rules sit with the DGSM under the Ministry of Commerce. Its conformity scheme put building materials in the first stage, with certification required from March 2025, and sanitary and tap ware in a later stage; ceramic tiles and cement also fall under the Omani Quality Mark. We check each HS code before you ship, and the broker confirms whether invoice or origin legalisation applies.
Common mistakes
The classic errors are booking a 40ft for tiles and finding it overweight, leaving the anti-dumping duty out of the landed cost, using untreated wooden crates, and writing building materials on the invoice instead of each product with its size, material, quantity and unit price. Another is shipping to Jebel Ali and trucking across the border without planning the customs treatment: goods can move in transit through the UAE so that duty and VAT are paid once, in Oman, but the documents must be set up before departure. Papers not ready at Sohar turn into storage and demurrage charges.

Questions
How long does shipping building materials from China to Oman take?
Typically 16–28 days door to door to Sohar or Muscat, depending on the sailing and customs. As of November 2026 the Hormuz closure does not block Sohar.
What duty do I pay on Chinese tiles in Oman?
5% customs duty on the CIF value, GCC anti-dumping duty at a rate set per exporter, and 5% VAT. Our broker confirms the figures from the HS code.
Should I use a 20ft or a 40ft container for tiles?
Usually a 20GP. Tiles reach the payload limit of about 25–28 tonnes before the box is full, and a 40ft does not carry much more weight.
Can I ship to Dubai and truck the goods to Oman?
Yes, in transit through the UAE in a sealed truck via Hatta and Al Wajajah, with duty and VAT paid once in Oman. Direct to Sohar is often simpler.
Who can import building materials into Oman?
A company with an Omani commercial registration that is registered as an importer in Bayan. Without one, you need a local consignee or importer of record.
