HS code (tariff code)
The international classification number for goods that determines the duty rate, permits and statistics for a product.
In four languages
The Harmonized System, maintained by the World Customs Organization, gives every product a 6-digit code that is the same worldwide. Countries add their own digits: China uses 10-digit codes on export declarations, while the GCC uses a 12-digit integrated tariff. Because the national digits differ, the Chinese export code and the Gulf import code may not match after the first 6 digits. The code decides the duty rate, whether permits or conformity certificates are needed, and sometimes whether goods are restricted. The importer's broker confirms the final code. Example: an importer brings in LED panel lights. The supplier's invoice shows the 6-digit HS code, and the Dubai broker selects the full 12-digit UAE code based on the product's description, which also shows whether any product approval is required.
Questions
Why is my Chinese HS code different from the UAE code?
Only the first 6 digits are international. China and the GCC add different national digits, so the full codes often differ.
Who decides the HS code for my goods?
The importer and its broker propose it and customs accepts or corrects it. A clear product description with material and use helps get it right.
