Key points
- Kulma–Karasu is the only direct road crossing from China, at about 4,362 m, and weather can close it.
- Most Tajik cargo goes round through Kyrgyzstan (Irkeshtam–Osh) or by rail via Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
- Tajikistan is a WTO member but not in the EAEU, so it has its own tariff, VAT and certification.
- Import VAT is 14% through 2026 and is scheduled to fall to 13% on 1 January 2027.
- Shipments onward to Afghanistan through Tajikistan need our compliance review first.
Routes from China to Tajikistan at a glance
Tajikistan is landlocked and mountainous, and its 450 km border with China runs through the Pamirs. That shapes every shipping decision. The short road over the Kulma pass is direct but high and slow; the road through Kyrgyzstan is longer but busier and better served; and rail works well for full containers but needs two transit countries. Which one wins depends on your cargo, your city in Tajikistan and the season.
| Route | Path | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kulma pass (road) | Kashgar – Karasu/Kulma – Murghab – Khorog – Dushanbe (Pamir Highway) | Trucks to the Pamirs (GBAO) and some Dushanbe loads | Altitude around 4,362 m, mountain roads, weather and holiday closures |
| Via Kyrgyzstan (road) | Kashgar – Irkeshtam – Osh – Batken – Isfara – Khujand or Dushanbe | Most trucked cargo, northern Tajikistan (Sughd) | Weekend and holiday closures at Irkeshtam, transit through Kyrgyzstan |
| Rail via Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan | Alashankou or Khorgos – Kazakhstan – Saryagash – Uzbekistan – Tajik border stations | Full containers, heavy cargo, Dushanbe and the south | Two gauge-transfer and transit regimes, wagon availability |
| Rail-road multimodal | Rail to Kashgar, truck over Irkeshtam, rail onward through Uzbekistan | Mixed loads, pilot services | Transloading at each change of mode |
The Kulma pass: the only direct road from China
The Karasu (Chinese side) – Kulma (Tajik side) port of entry opened in May 2004 and sits at about 4,362 m. From Karasu it is roughly 220 km to Kashgar, and on the Tajik side the road drops to Murghab, about 80 km away, before the long Pamir Highway to Khorog and Dushanbe. Chinese figures released in September 2026 described it as China's only land gateway to Tajikistan and reported about 18,000 commercial vehicle crossings in the first eight months of 2026, up nearly 20%, after clearance hours were extended and inspection lanes added.
Rail via Uzbekistan and road via Kyrgyzstan
For containers, the main rail path runs from western China through Alashankou–Dostyk or Khorgos–Altynkol, across Kazakhstan to Saryagash, into Uzbekistan and then onto Tajik railways. The Tajik network is split: the Dushanbe and southern lines connect to Uzbek rail in the west near Tursunzoda and in the south on the Galaba–Amuzang link from the Termez area, reopened in 2018, while the northern Khujand line connects separately via Bekabad and Konibodom. In February 2026 a pilot container train left Lanzhou for Dushanbe-2 station through a China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan–Tajikistan multimodal corridor, with an expected 18–20 days for over 3,500 km. The planned China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway is under construction and not yet in service, so do not plan on it.
- Shortest distance from Kashgar
- Best for the Pamirs and Khorog
- High altitude, long mountain driving to Dushanbe

- Typically about 12–20 days door to door from eastern China
- Irkeshtam closes at weekends and on public holidays
- Cargo crosses Kyrgyzstan, an EAEU member, under customs transit or TIR
- Best for full 40' containers and heavy goods
- Crosses Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in transit
- Gauge transfer at the China–Kazakhstan border takes about 1–3 days
- Transit time depends on wagon supply; our team confirms a current estimate

Documents for a Tajikistan import
0/9Certification, Afghanistan transit and compliance
Tajikistan is not part of the Eurasian Economic Union, so EAEU rules do not apply on import. Many goods need certification through Tajikstandart, the national standards agency, and an EAC certificate obtained for Kazakhstan or Russia is not automatically enough; ask us to check before you ship. Remember that loads crossing Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan are only in transit there, so their EAEU duties and VAT do not apply as long as the transit is closed correctly in Tajikistan. Tajikistan is also a gateway to northern Afghanistan through the Panji Poyon – Sher Khan Bandar bridge to Kunduz.

Frequently asked questions
How long does shipping from China to Tajikistan take?
By road from eastern China, typically about 12–20 days door to door to Dushanbe. A February 2026 pilot multimodal container train from Lanzhou to Dushanbe was planned at 18–20 days. Border queues, holidays and winter weather can add days, so our team confirms a current estimate.
Is the Kulma pass open all year?
Not reliably. It historically opened only part of the year and now works on weekdays for most of the year, but snow, avalanches and holidays can close it. We check its status before booking and switch to the Kyrgyzstan or rail route if needed.
Can I ship by train from China to Dushanbe?
Yes. Rail runs from western China through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan into the Tajik network, and Dushanbe-2 station has received pilot container trains. There is no direct China–Tajikistan railway.
What is the import duty and VAT in Tajikistan?
Import duty under the national tariff ranges from 0% to 15%, with a trade-weighted average of about 7%. VAT is 14% in 2026, scheduled to fall to 13% from 1 January 2027. Excise applies to some goods.
Is Tajikistan in the Eurasian Economic Union?
No. Tajikistan is a WTO member (since 2013) but not an EAEU member, so it applies its own tariff, VAT and certification rules rather than the EAEU Common Customs Tariff and EAC system.
Where is customs cleared for Dushanbe deliveries?
Usually at an inland customs post in Dushanbe. The goods enter at the border under customs transit, travel sealed to Dushanbe, and a licensed broker files the declaration and pays duty and VAT there.
