- The China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway is under construction and not yet in service.
Routes from China to Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan borders Xinjiang, and Kashgar is the Chinese gateway for both road crossings. Goods are usually trucked or railed from the factory to Kashgar, then cross the Tian Shan on Kyrgyz or other Central Asian trucks, because Chinese trucks generally do not drive deep into Central Asia. Cargo is often transloaded at Kashgar or at the border, which can add 1–3 days. Containers can also travel by rail through Kazakhstan via Khorgos or Alashankou and continue to Bishkek; our team confirms which option is running best for your dates.
| Crossing | Road on the Kyrgyz side | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Torugart | Torugart – Naryn – Bishkek | Bishkek, Chui region, the north and onward to Kazakhstan | Pass at about 3,750 m; winter weather closures; electronic truck queue piloted from March 2026 |
| Irkeshtam | Irkeshtam – Sary-Tash – Osh | Osh, Jalal-Abad, the Fergana Valley, transit to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan | Over 3,000 m; China has run TIR operations here since 2018 |
| Rail via Kazakhstan | Khorgos or Alashankou – Kazakhstan – Bishkek | Full containers and heavy cargo for the north | Gauge change at the China–Kazakhstan border; transit under EAEU customs control |
- Shortest road link from Kashgar to Bishkek
- Climbs to about 3,750 m, so winter snow can stop traffic
- Queues have stretched up to 25 km; an electronic booking queue with a waiting area at Kara-Bulak was piloted in 2026
- Best for importers in Bishkek and the north
- Main road for Osh and southern Kyrgyzstan
- Part of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan road corridor to Andijan and Tashkent
- Used for transit cargo to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan
- Best for importers in Osh, Jalal-Abad and the Fergana Valley
- Suits full 20' and 40' containers and heavy goods
- Avoids the mountain passes
- Goods enter the EAEU at the Kazakh border and travel in transit to Kyrgyz customs
- Gauge transfer and border queues can add days
Transit times, seasons and border closures
From a factory in eastern China, door to door by road to Bishkek or Osh typically takes about 8–14 days. From Urumqi or Kashgar, subtract roughly 4–6 days of domestic trucking. Golden Way's published Central Asia service by rail and road via Khorgos runs at a typical 10–20 days. Times depend on the crossing, queues and the season. Torugart and Irkeshtam close on weekends and on Chinese and Kyrgyz public holidays, and both were shut on 1 January 2026 for the New Year. In winter, snow and avalanches at the passes slow or stop traffic. Plan ready dates so the truck does not reach the border on a Friday evening or the eve of a holiday.
EAEU member rules: duty, 12% VAT and customs fee
Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union with Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia. Goods from China pay import duty under the EAEU Common Customs Tariff, which is the same in all members and is based on the 10-digit TN VED EAEU code. Rates can be ad valorem, specific or combined; most industrial goods fall in a 0–15% range. Import VAT is 12%, charged on the customs value plus duty plus any excise. Kyrgyzstan also charges a customs operations fee of 0.4% of the customs value, with a minimum of 500 som and a maximum of 250,000 som. Once released for free circulation, goods can move to Kazakhstan or Russia without another customs clearance, but VAT is due in the country where they are sold. Customs is run by the State Customs Service under the Cabinet of Ministers.
| Line (illustrative example) | Base | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Customs value (goods + freight + insurance to the EAEU border) | – | USD 20,000 |
| Import duty at an assumed 10% | USD 20,000 | USD 2,000 |
| VAT at 12% | USD 22,000 (value + duty) | USD 2,640 |
| Customs fee at 0.4% | USD 20,000 | USD 80 (within the som minimum and maximum) |
| Total duties and taxes | – | USD 4,720 |
Most goods from China pay 5% GCC duty on CIF, once, at the first GCC entry. VAT is on CIF + duty. Estimate only.
Bishkek or Osh: where to deliver and clear
Bishkek, the capital, is the main market and distribution point for the north, and cargo usually arrives over Torugart via Naryn or by rail and road through Kazakhstan. Osh is the hub of the south and of the Fergana Valley trade with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and cargo arrives over Irkeshtam via Sary-Tash. Goods can cross the border under EAEU customs transit and be cleared at an inland customs post near the importer instead of at the pass.
- Choose the crossing by delivery city: Torugart for Bishkek, Irkeshtam for Osh.
- Clear inland in Bishkek or Osh if your broker and warehouse are there; the truck travels sealed under transit from the border.
- Cargo for Uzbekistan or Tajikistan passes Kyrgyzstan in transit and is cleared in the destination country.
- Full truck loads use tilt trailers of about 82–90 CBM and 20–24 t; part loads are often priced on 1 CBM = 333 kg.
- Kyrgyzstan is a CMR party but China is not, so the CMR applies from the first CMR country or by contract.

Planned links and a quick check
Two projects will change this corridor later, but neither is available today. The China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway (Kashgar – Torugart – Makmal – Jalal-Abad – Andijan, about 480 km) entered its active construction phase in 2025–2026 and is not yet in service. Kyrgyz officials have also announced a third road route over the Bedel Pass, with completion scheduled for August 2029. Until then, Torugart, Irkeshtam and rail via Kazakhstan are the options.
