- ASYCUDA in the Kurdistan Region was agreed in April 2026; its launch date was not final as of September 2026.

Why a shipment to Erbil is not the same as one to Baghdad
Erbil is the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, which also includes Duhok, Sulaymaniyah and Halabja. Customs in the region is run by KRG customs directorates under the KRG Ministry of Finance, coordinating with Baghdad, at its own gateways: Ibrahim Khalil on the Turkish border, three crossings with Iran, and the airports of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. The tariff is now the same as in federal Iraq, but the systems and practice still differ, so tell us the final city before we plan the route.

The main route: through Turkey and the Habur crossing
Habur on the Turkish side and Ibrahim Khalil on the Iraqi side form the main Turkey–Iraq road crossing, and it sits in Duhok province, a short drive from Erbil. Cargo reaches it in two ways. By sea, containers sail from China to Mersin or Iskenderun on Turkey's Mediterranean coast; most Asia–Europe services still go around the Cape of Good Hope in 2026 because the Red Sea remains high-risk, so sailing times are longer than in the past. By land, our running China to Turkey service uses the Middle Corridor rail route and TIR trucks, with a typical 15–25 days to Turkey. From the port or rail terminal, a truck crosses Turkey under transit and enters the Kurdistan Region at Ibrahim Khalil.
- Full containers or LCL to Mersin or Iskenderun.
- Turkish transit under TIR or national transit to Habur.
- Iraq has run TIR fully since 1 April 2025 and made it mandatory for road transit from November 2025.
- Longer sailing while carriers avoid the Red Sea.
- Rail through Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Georgia into Turkey.
- Our China to Turkey service on this route is running, typically 15–25 days.
- Useful when sea schedules are long or unreliable.
- The onward leg from Turkey into Iraq is quoted case by case.
- Sea to Umm Qasr, or a land bridge via Jeddah to Arar or via Aqaba to Trebil.
- Cleared in federal Iraq, then trucked north to Erbil.
- Umm Qasr calls are limited while Hormuz is disrupted.
- Sensible when the consignee is in federal Iraq or the goods are split.
- Haji Omaran, Bashmakh and Parvizkhan link the region with Iran.
- Iran is under UN, EU, UK and US sanctions, and its ports have been under a US naval blockade in 2026.
- We do not offer Iran transit as a standard route.
- Any request involving Iran goes to our compliance team first.
Kurdistan Region customs in 2026
Since 2 June 2025 Iraq has enforced one unified tariff at all crossings, including Kurdistan, using reference price lists agreed in Cabinet Resolution 270 of 2023. Before that, Kurdistan clearance was often faster and cheaper, and in early 2026 traders shifted volume north when ASYCUDA started at federal crossings. Baghdad then cut average reference values by 25% at southern and Kurdistan crossings in February 2026. Erbil and Baghdad agreed on 6 April 2026 to unify procedures and bring ASYCUDA to Kurdistan crossings, with border revenue split 50–50. In September 2026 the KRG said it had formally decided to implement ASYCUDA, but the launch date was not final; we could not confirm it is live as of November 2026.
- Expect valuation against Iraqi reference prices: if your invoice is lower, the higher value can apply.
- Plan for a COSQC Certificate of Conformity for regulated products; whether Kurdistan crossings check it exactly as federal ones do is not confirmed.
- Goods cleared in Kurdistan and moved into federal provinces have faced internal checkpoints, for example around Kirkuk, collecting any difference.
- The importer must be a registered Iraqi or Kurdistan company or trader using a licensed customs broker.
- Rules are changing quickly; we check the current practice at Ibrahim Khalil for every booking.

For part loads, road carriers commonly charge on a weight or volume ratio such as 1 CBM = 333 kg, whichever gives the higher figure; the exact ratio varies by carrier. Use the calculator to see whether your cargo will be charged on weight or volume before you ask for a quote.
Usable space: 20GP ~25–28 CBM, 40GP ~55–58, 40HQ ~65–68.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best route from China to Erbil?
Usually through Turkey: sea to Mersin or Iskenderun, or Middle Corridor rail to Turkey, then a truck via Habur–Ibrahim Khalil. Our team compares it with a southern entry for your cargo.
How long does shipping from China to Erbil take?
Our China to Turkey rail and road service typically takes 15–25 days to Turkey; the truck leg and border clearance come on top. Sea to Mersin is longer while carriers avoid the Red Sea. We confirm a typical time per booking.
Is customs duty in Kurdistan different from the rest of Iraq?
The tariff has been unified at all crossings, including Kurdistan, since 2 June 2025. Practice and systems still differ, and goods moved later to federal provinces can be checked again.
Is ASYCUDA used at Ibrahim Khalil?
Erbil and Baghdad agreed in April 2026 to extend ASYCUDA to Kurdistan crossings and the KRG said in September 2026 it was ready, but the launch date was not final. We check the current status for each shipment.

Iran routes are sanctions-sensitive. We do not offer them as a standard option and review any such request through our compliance team first.
