Shipping solar panels, inverters and batteries from China to Oman
Golden Way ships solar equipment from China to Oman by sea to Sohar, outside the Strait of Hormuz, with a typical transit of 16–28 days, then delivers by truck to Muscat or the project site. Panels and inverters travel as general cargo, but lithium batteries are Class 9 dangerous goods that need a UN38.3 test summary, an SDS, UN packaging and carrier approval. Most items pay 5% duty on the CIF value plus 5% VAT, confirmed by HS code.

How it works
- Split the orderBook panels and inverters as general cargo and batteries as a separate dangerous goods line.
- Collect battery papersThe supplier provides the UN38.3 test summary, SDS, UN packaging and the China Customs DG packaging certificate.
- Book and loadWe confirm carrier DG acceptance, load panels upright on braced pallets and file the Chinese export declaration.
- Sail to SoharThe shipping agent files the manifest in Bayan at least 36 hours before the vessel arrives at Sohar.
- Clear in BayanOur broker files the import declaration with the invoice, packing list, B/L, certificate of origin and any permits.
- DeliverA truck takes the cargo to Muscat, about two hours by road from Sohar, or straight to the site.
Three kinds of cargo in one solar order
A solar order looks like one purchase, but it ships as three. Panels are bulky, fragile glass: they travel upright in cartons on pallets with corner protection and strapping, and most orders fill a 40ft high cube by volume. Cells can crack without visible damage, so careful forklift work and a braced load matter, and a pre-shipment inspection on large orders is worth it. Inverters and controllers are ordinary electrical goods, but models with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cellular monitoring need TRA type approval in Oman. Lithium batteries for storage are dangerous goods, which changes the booking, the documents and sometimes the sailing.
Lithium battery dangerous goods rules
Lithium-ion batteries shipped alone are UN3480, and batteries packed with or inside equipment are UN3481. At sea they are Class 9 under the IMDG Code, Amendment 42-24, mandatory since 1 January 2026. The supplier needs a UN38.3 test summary for each model, an SDS, UN-specification packaging and the China Customs DG packaging certificate; the shipper signs a DG declaration and the packer a container packing certificate. Each carrier approves DG separately, with an earlier cut-off and a surcharge, and several suspended DG bookings to many Gulf ports in 2026. China's October 2025 controls on certain high-energy lithium batteries were suspended only until 10 November 2026, so ask us to check your model.
Why Sohar, and how Oman clears the goods
Sohar, Salalah and Duqm all sit outside the Strait of Hormuz, and Sohar is the main gateway for northern Oman and Muscat; Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat now handles mainly cruise traffic. Oman Customs, part of the Royal Oman Police, clears every declaration through the Bayan single window. The importer needs an Omani commercial registration and Bayan importer registration, or a local consignee. Electrical products must meet Omani and GSO standards under DGSM, and regulated low-voltage goods carry the Gulf conformity mark. Our broker checks in Bayan, before shipping, which approvals your panels, inverters and batteries need.
Duty, VAT and Chinese price changes
Oman applies the GCC common tariff: most goods pay 5% customs duty on the CIF value, some lines are exempt, and our broker confirms the 12-digit HS code for each item. VAT is 5% of CIF plus duty, and eligible VAT-registered importers can use Oman's VAT deferment scheme instead of paying at the border. There is no China–GCC free trade agreement in force, so no preferential certificate reduces the duty. On the Chinese side, export VAT rebates on photovoltaic products were cancelled on 1 April 2026, and the battery rebate fell from 9% to 6% and is due to end on 1 January 2027, which can push FOB prices up.

Questions
Can lithium batteries go by sea from China to Oman?
Yes, as declared Class 9 dangerous goods with a UN38.3 summary, SDS, UN packaging and carrier approval. Some carriers limited DG bookings to Gulf ports in 2026, so we check each booking.
What is the import duty on solar panels in Oman?
Most goods pay 5% of the CIF value under the GCC tariff and some lines are exempt, plus 5% VAT on CIF and duty. Our broker confirms the rate from the HS code.
Should solar cargo go to Sohar or through Dubai?
Our running route is sea to Sohar, which is outside the Strait of Hormuz. Trucking from the UAE in transit is possible but usually adds a leg.
Why have Chinese solar and battery prices gone up?
China cancelled export VAT rebates on PV products from 1 April 2026 and cut battery rebates to 6%, ending on 1 January 2027, so suppliers adjust FOB prices.
How long does shipping solar panels from China to Oman take?
Typically 16–28 days via Sohar. Dangerous goods may wait longer for carrier space, so book battery lines early.
