Shipping from Alibaba to Dubai: Supplier Freight, Your Own Forwarder and Clearance

To ship an Alibaba order to Dubai you either let the supplier arrange freight (usually CIF, CFR or a 'DDP door to door' offer) or buy FOB or FCA and use your own forwarder. For regular importers the second option is usually clearer: you control the routing, see the destination charges in advance and clear customs in your own name, paying 5% duty on CIF and 5% VAT. As of November 2026 most UAE cargo is discharged at Khor Fakkan and trucked to Dubai, and our team quotes the full route within one working day.

Key points

  • Supplier-arranged CIF looks cheap but destination charges are usually billed to you in Dubai.
  • FOB or FCA with your own forwarder gives you control of freight, routing and costs.
  • DDP from a Chinese supplier often means someone else clears in their name, and you may lose the VAT reverse charge.
  • Several Alibaba suppliers can be consolidated into one container, one B/L and one clearance.
  • Trade Assurance protects the purchase, not the freight; insure the cargo separately.

Two ways to ship an Alibaba order

On Alibaba.com the price you negotiate is only part of the cost. The Incoterm in your order decides who books the ship, who pays which charges, where risk passes and who clears customs in Dubai. Many suppliers offer to handle shipping for you; others quote FOB and expect your forwarder to take over at the port.

  • Usually quoted CIF or CFR Jebel Ali, or as 'DDP door to door'.
  • Simple for a first small order: one price from one counterparty.
  • Freight is chosen by the supplier; you see the routing only after booking.
  • Destination charges, clearance and delivery are often not included and are billed in Dubai.

Choosing the Incoterm on your Alibaba order

Write the rule with a precise place and the edition, for example 'FOB Shenzhen Yantian, Incoterms 2020' or 'FCA supplier's warehouse, full address, Incoterms 2020'. A vague 'FOB China' or 'CIF UAE' is a common source of disputes over who pays what.

Consolidating several Alibaba suppliers

Buyers often order from three or four Alibaba suppliers at once. Shipping each one separately multiplies minimum charges, documents and clearances. Buying FCA or EXW-to-warehouse and delivering everything to one consolidation warehouse gives one container or LCL lot, one B/L and one Dubai clearance. FCA is preferred, so each supplier handles its own export declaration.

  1. Agree FCA with each supplierName the consolidation warehouse as the place of delivery and confirm who declares export.
  2. Share the entry noticeWarehouse address, your shipping mark and the latest delivery date go to every supplier.
  3. Collect invoices and packing listsEach shows true values, exact product descriptions and per-carton weights and dimensions.
  4. Inspect before the balanceBook a pre-shipment inspection or a warehouse check, then pay the balance.
  5. Receive and recordThe warehouse counts, photographs and reports any shortage or damage.
  6. Load and declareGoods are loaded as one FCL or LCL lot and each export declaration is filed.
  7. Ship and trackOne B/L covers the lot; you track it through to arrival in the UAE.
  8. Clear and deliverOur broker clears in Dubai and a local truck delivers to your warehouse or shop.

The sea leg in 2026: diversions and who pays

As of November 2026 ships cannot normally reach Jebel Ali through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed to container shipping since 28 February 2026. Carriers discharge UAE cargo at Khor Fakkan, Fujairah or Sohar and move it in by truck, with emergency surcharges. Some carriers declared 'end of voyage' at alternative ports earlier in 2026. Under CIF or CFR 'Jebel Ali', risk has already passed to you at origin, and extra on-carriage and storage from a diversion usually fall on the cargo interest under the carrier's B/L terms. Agree in the contract who bears diversion and war-surcharge costs. Trade Assurance protects quality and on-time delivery of the purchase, not the freight, and CIF insurance is only minimum ICC C cover, so ask for ICC A with war and strikes or buy your own.

Clearing your Alibaba order in Dubai

The importer needs a trade licence covering import or trading and a customs client code in the emirate of clearance. The broker files the import declaration in Mirsal 2 with the commercial invoice, packing list, B/L, certificate of origin and any permits. Duty is 5% of the CIF value for most goods; VAT is 5% of CIF plus duty, collected at the border unless your customs code is linked to your VAT TRN for the reverse charge. Invoices of AED 10,000 or more need MOFA attestation at AED 150 per invoice. Electronics, chargers, toys and other regulated items need ECAS, and wireless devices need TDRA approval before arrival.

Frequently asked questions

How do I ship from Alibaba to Dubai?

Either accept the supplier's freight offer or buy FOB or FCA and use your own forwarder, who collects, ships, clears customs in Dubai and delivers. For repeat imports, your own forwarder usually gives clearer costs.

Is it better to let the Alibaba supplier ship?

For a first small order it can be simpler, but check what is included. CIF and CFR often leave destination charges, clearance and delivery for you to pay in Dubai.

Which Incoterm should I use on Alibaba?

FOB a named Chinese port or FCA the supplier's warehouse when you use your own forwarder. Avoid EXW, because a foreign buyer cannot normally clear export in China.

Does Trade Assurance cover shipping?

It covers quality and on-time delivery of qualifying orders paid through Alibaba.com, with refund claims within 30 days of delivery. It is not cargo insurance.

How much duty do I pay on Alibaba goods in Dubai?

5% of the CIF value for most goods, plus 5% VAT on CIF plus duty. VAT-registered importers with a linked customs code can reverse-charge the VAT.

Can you combine orders from several Alibaba suppliers?

Yes. We receive goods from several suppliers at a consolidation warehouse in China and ship them as one container or LCL lot with one B/L and one clearance.

How long does shipping from China to Dubai take now?

Our typical China to UAE transit is 18–30 days door to door via Khor Fakkan as of November 2026. The team confirms the current routing for each booking.
