Key points
- Plan your visit by district: toys and jewellery in District 1, hardware and bags in 2, stationery and cosmetics in 3, socks, shoes and textiles in 4, imported goods and bedding in 5.
- Small MOQs are normal, often one or two cartons per item, but prices are quoted in RMB and stalls expect full payment.
- Market stalls usually cannot issue VAT invoices, which is why mode 1039 (VAT exempt, no rebate) exists.
- Give every shop your shipping mark and the warehouse entry notice, and set one hard delivery cut-off.
- Batteries, magnets, liquids, branded goods and licensed items need checking before you buy, not after.
What Yiwu market is, in numbers
Yiwu sits about two hours by high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao. Its trade city is a chain of linked buildings where small manufacturers and traders keep showrooms and take wholesale orders. For a Gulf importer it is the place to fill a mixed container with household goods, toys, stationery, hardware, accessories, festival items and textiles from dozens of suppliers in a few days. Yiwu's market procurement exports reached about 599 billion yuan in 2025, more than 80% of the city's exports, according to Chinese state media.

MOQ, prices and payment
Most Yiwu stalls are showrooms for small factories or wholesalers, so the minimum order is set per item and is usually low: one or two cartons is common for stock goods, and more for custom colours, printing or private-label packaging. Discounts of around 5–10% for larger quantities are possible. Prices are quoted in RMB and stalls generally expect full payment; cash, bank transfer and RMB payment providers are the usual methods, and cards are rarely accepted.
- Ask each stall for the price per piece, pieces per carton, carton size and gross weight, and write them on the order slip.
- Confirm whether the price is for stock goods or new production, and the ready date for each line.
- Photograph the sample and keep the stall number, company name and phone on every order slip.
- Agree in writing who delivers to the warehouse and by which date. Most stalls deliver free within Yiwu.
- Pay only to the account in the name on the order or contract, and confirm any change of bank details by phone.
Buy alone, with a guide, or through a sourcing agent?
- Lowest cost and full control over every choice.
- You handle language, order slips, payments and chasing deliveries yourself.
- Works best for repeat buyers who know their products and stalls.
- A guide walks the districts with you, translates and helps negotiate.
- Guides are often free to the buyer and earn about 2–5% commission from the shops, so ask how they are paid.
- Good for a first visit, but the guide may steer you to shops that pay commission.
- Places orders, follows production and receives goods after you leave.
- Charges a service fee, usually a percentage of the order value; agree it in writing.
- Useful when you buy from many stalls or order repeatedly without travelling.
Yiwu 1039 export: the market procurement trade mode
Many Yiwu stalls cannot export in their own name or issue VAT special invoices. China's market procurement trade mode, customs code 1039, was built for exactly this. China's first market procurement declaration was filed in Yiwu, and the model now runs in 39 markets, including Guangzhou Huadu and Shenzhen. A registered market operator declares the goods through the market procurement networked information platform, lines can be grouped under broader HS categories, the export is VAT exempt with no rebate, and a declaration is commonly capped at USD 150,000. Goods that need export licences, controlled items and some inspection-sensitive goods are excluded, and rules vary by pilot area, so our partner broker confirms each shipment.
