Consolidation from multiple Chinese suppliers: one container, one B/L

Consolidation from multiple Chinese suppliers means each supplier delivers to one warehouse in China, where the cartons are counted, checked and loaded together into a single container for you. You get one B/L, one import clearance and usually a lower cost per CBM than several separate LCL shipments. It works best when all suppliers deliver on time and send correct invoices and packing lists.

Key points

  • Buyer's consolidation puts goods from several suppliers into one FCL under one B/L and one import clearance.
  • From about 12–15 CBM in total, one container usually beats several separate LCL shipments.
  • The warehouse records cartons, CBM, weight and damage for every supplier before loading.
  • Each supplier can declare its own export, an agent can declare the whole box, or market goods can use mode 1039.
  • Late suppliers are the most common cause of a missed vessel, so set one firm delivery deadline.

What buyer's consolidation is, and how it differs from LCL

There are two kinds of consolidation in China. In ordinary LCL, a consolidator fills one container with cargo from many different customers. In buyer's consolidation, the container belongs to one buyer only: our warehouse receives goods from all of that buyer's suppliers, checks them and loads one FCL. The second model is what most importers mean when they ask about consolidation from multiple Chinese suppliers, and it is the one this guide covers.

  • One container used only for your goods
  • One B/L and one import clearance
  • Lower cost per CBM once volume reaches container size
  • Cargo is loaded once and sealed, with less handling
  • Needs all suppliers to meet one deadline

How consolidation works, step by step

  1. List your suppliersSend us each supplier's name, city, goods and expected cartons so we can plan the warehouse space and container size.
  2. Issue the warehouse entry noticeEach supplier receives the warehouse address, your shipping mark, a booking reference and the delivery deadline.
  3. Suppliers deliverSuppliers truck goods to our Guangzhou warehouse, or we collect from them, for example in Foshan.
  4. Receive and checkCartons are counted, measured, weighed and photographed against each supplier's packing list. Damage or shortages are reported to you the same day.
  5. Optional QCA pre-shipment inspection or container loading supervision can be added before the box is closed.
  6. Export declarationEach supplier declares its own goods, or one agent declares the whole container, or market goods go under mode 1039.
  7. Load and sealThe container is loaded with heavy cartons at the bottom, photographed and sealed; the seal number goes on the B/L.
  8. One B/L, one clearanceThe container sails under one B/L and is cleared once at destination, then delivered to your door.

Warehouse checks before loading

The value of consolidation is that someone you trust sees the goods before they leave China. Our warehouse compares what arrives with what each supplier says it sent, and tells you while the supplier can still fix a problem.

Who files the export declaration

Every carton leaving China must be covered by an export declaration filed through the China International Trade Single Window. In a consolidated container there are three ways to do it, and the choice affects your suppliers' VAT rebate and price.

Each supplier declares its own goodsFactories registered with China Customs that issue VAT invoicesSupplier keeps its export VAT rebate under general trade (0110)

Where the savings come from

Consolidation does not make the ocean freight per container cheaper. It saves by turning many small shipments into one. Take five suppliers with 3 CBM each. Shipped separately as LCL, that is five B/Ls, five sets of destination CFS, delivery order and documentation fees, five import declarations and five minimum charges, with goods arriving on different days. Consolidated, the same 15 CBM fits comfortably in a 20GP: one booking, one set of destination charges, one clearance and one delivery truck. Your duty and VAT stay the same, because they are calculated on the goods' value, not the shipping method. Use the calculator to add up your suppliers' volume, then compare with the container sizes below.

What can go wrong in a consolidation

  • One late supplier holds the whole container. Set a deadline a few days before the CFS or loading date and decide in advance whether late goods wait for the next box.
  • Free storage is limited to a set number of days, then charged. Early suppliers should not deliver weeks ahead.
  • Documents that do not match the cartons, such as missing packing lists or vague descriptions like "parts", cause customs queries.
  • Undeclared dangerous goods from one supplier can delay every other supplier's cargo in the same box.
  • Chinese New Year 2027 falls on 6 February 2027 and many factories close for 2–4 weeks around it. Order by about early December 2026.
  • Heavy goods such as tiles reach the weight limit before the volume limit, so check payload before choosing a 40ft.

Shipping the consolidated container to the Gulf

Once sealed, a consolidated container moves like any FCL. To the UAE, typical door-to-door time is 18–30 days. As of November 2026 the Strait of Hormuz is closed to normal container shipping, so containers for Dubai are discharged at Khor Fakkan and moved to Jebel Ali by bonded truck before import clearance. Our team confirms the routing and quotes the full door-to-door cost within one working day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine goods from multiple Chinese suppliers into one shipment?

Yes. Each supplier delivers to our warehouse in Guangzhou, where we count, check and photograph the cartons and load them into one container under one B/L.

How much does consolidation save compared with separate LCL?

It depends on the volume and the route, so our team quotes both options. The saving comes from paying one set of destination fees, one clearance and one delivery instead of one per supplier.

What is the minimum volume for buyer's consolidation?

There is no fixed minimum. Under about 12 CBM your consolidated cargo usually ships as LCL; from about 12–15 CBM a 20GP is often better value.

How long can goods wait in the consolidation warehouse?

Storage is usually free for a limited number of days and then charged. Our team confirms the free period when you book.

Do all suppliers need to provide an invoice and packing list?

Yes. Each supplier's invoice and packing list are needed for export customs, import clearance and to check what arrived against what was sent.

Can you consolidate goods bought at the Yiwu or Guangzhou markets?

Yes. Market goods from suppliers without VAT invoices are often declared under the market procurement mode 1039, which our team handles through partner agents.

What happens if one supplier is late?

You decide whether the container waits or sails without those goods, which then follow in a later shipment. Setting one firm deadline avoids most of these problems.
