Key points
- Typical door-to-door transit China to Europe by road is 15–25 days, depending on route, ferry and border queues.
- TIR lets a customs-sealed truck cross several countries without paying duties or opening the load at each border.
- EU sanctions bar Russian and Belarusian road carriers from carrying goods inside the EU, so most of our road freight uses the Middle Corridor via the Caspian and Turkey.
- Trucks suit urgent, high-value, part-load or door-to-door cargo; full containers of low-value goods are usually cheaper by rail or sea.
- An ICS2 entry summary declaration must reach EU customs at least 1 hour before the truck arrives at the border.
Is trucking from China to Europe a real option in 2026?
Road freight from China to Europe is no longer a niche experiment. China joined the TIR Convention in July 2016 and started TIR operations in May 2018 at Horgos, Irkeshtam, Erenhot, Manzhouli, Suifenhe and Dalian. Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and all EU member states are TIR parties too, so a truck sealed in Xinjiang can reach Germany or Poland without being opened at each border. As of November 2026, with many sea services still avoiding the Red Sea and the Brest–Małaszewicze rail gateway prone to congestion, more shippers ask about trucks. Golden Way runs China to Turkey and Europe by the Middle Corridor and TIR trucks, with typical transit of 15–25 days.
The two road corridors from China to Europe
The northern road runs through Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus or the Baltic states. The Middle Corridor crosses Kazakhstan to the Caspian ports of Aktau or Kuryk, takes a ferry to Baku or Alat, then drives through Georgia and Turkey into the EU via the Balkans. A road through Turkmenistan and Iran was historically shorter, but as of November 2026 Iran is in an active conflict and under heavy sanctions, so it needs a compliance review.
| Corridor | Path | Main constraints | Status for our shipments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Middle Corridor (road + Caspian ferry) | Xinjiang – Kazakhstan – Aktau/Kuryk – ferry – Baku/Alat – Georgia – Turkey – Balkans – EU | Caspian ferry capacity, weather and port waits; Turkish and Balkan border queues | Running: our main road lane to Turkey and Europe |
| Northern road | Xinjiang – Kazakhstan – Russia – Belarus or Baltics – EU | EU ban on Russian and Belarusian road carriers; Belarus–EU closures and queues; sanctions screening | Only after a compliance review; cargo must be carried or swapped to a non-Russian, non-Belarusian carrier |
| Southern road via Iran | Central Asia – Turkmenistan – Iran – Turkey | Active conflict and sanctions as of November 2026 | Not offered without a full compliance review |
How TIR works on a China–Europe truck
TIR is a UN customs transit system under the 1975 TIR Convention, administered by UNECE, with the guarantee chain run by the IRU through national associations. The carrier loads an approved, sealable trailer, opens a TIR carnet (or eTIR declaration) at the office of departure, and customs seal the load. At each transit border, officers check seals and carnet instead of opening the cargo or demanding a national guarantee. The guarantee per carnet has a maximum set per country, so very high-value loads may need another procedure. TIR ends at the office of destination, at the EU border or inland, where the goods are declared for import. China is not a CMR party, so CMR rules apply from the first CMR country or by contract.

Truck, rail or sea: when road freight makes sense
- Typically 15–25 days door to door to Turkey and the EU
- Factory to consignee's dock without transhipment
- Good for part loads, urgent and high-value goods
- Higher cost per CBM than rail or sea
- Exposed to ferry waits, border queues and winter
- Typically 12–18 days to Poland and 14–22 days to Germany, station to station, on the northern route
- Best for full containers on fixed weekly departures
- Most trains enter the EU at Brest–Małaszewicze, the main bottleneck
- Northern route transits Russia and Belarus, so shipments are screened
- About 40–50 days to Rotterdam while carriers route via the Cape of Good Hope
- Lowest cost per CBM for full containers
- Best for heavy, low-value or non-urgent cargo
- Needs trucking from the European port to the final address
A truck usually wins when time matters more than freight cost: stock that would otherwise run out, seasonal goods with a launch date, spare parts for a stopped line, or high-value goods where a week of capital in transit costs more than the price gap. It also helps when the consignee is far from a rail terminal or port. For a full 40-foot container of furniture with no deadline, rail or sea is normally better. Our team compares all three and quotes within one working day.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a truck take from China to Europe?
Typically 15–25 days door to door, depending on the corridor, the Caspian ferry, border queues and the final destination.
Is trucking from China to Europe cheaper than air freight?
Usually yes. Road freight costs much less than air but more than rail or sea per cubic metre. Rates change weekly; our team quotes within one working day.
Do I need a TIR carnet to truck goods from China to Europe?
The carrier arranges the TIR carnet or eTIR declaration. It covers transit without duties at each border; EU duty and VAT are still due at destination.
Can Russian or Belarusian trucks deliver inside the EU?
No. Since April 2022 EU sanctions bar road transport companies established in Russia or Belarus from carrying goods within the EU.
What is the Middle Corridor for trucks?
It is the road and ferry route from China through Kazakhstan, across the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan, then through Georgia and Turkey into Europe. It avoids Russia, but the Caspian crossing can add waiting time.
Which documents are needed for road freight from China to the EU?
Commercial invoice, packing list, Chinese export declaration, TIR carnet, CMR note, ICS2 entry data with a 6-digit HS code, the importer's EORI and any product compliance papers such as a CE Declaration of Conformity.
How much fits in a truck from China to Europe?
A standard 13.6 m tilt trailer holds about 82–90 CBM and typically 20–24 tonnes. Mega trailers take about 100 CBM for light, bulky goods.
