Key points
- Rail is roughly half the sea transit time to Europe and much cheaper than air.
- Most trains enter the EU at Brest–Małaszewicze, the main bottleneck of the network.
- Containers change gauge twice on the northern route: entering Kazakhstan and entering Poland.
- Volumes are rising in 2026: 5,460 trips in Q1, up 29% year on year.
- Goods transiting Russia and Belarus are screened for sanctions; some shippers choose the Middle Corridor instead.
China Europe rail freight in 2026 at a glance
The China–Europe Railway Express is a network of scheduled block trains carrying containers between Chinese inland hubs and European terminals. It made 20,022 trips in 2025 and passed 130,000 cumulative trips by July 2026. China Railway reported 5,460 trips and 546,000 TEU in the first quarter of 2026, up 29% and 22% year on year, as sea disruption and high air cargo costs pushed shippers onto rail. Main hubs include Xi'an, Chongqing, Chengdu, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Yiwu, Suzhou, Hefei and Changsha.
The routes: northern corridors and the Middle Corridor
| Route | Path | Gauge changes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Western (Kazakhstan) | Alashankou or Khorgos – Kazakhstan – Russia – Belarus – Poland | Dostyk or Altynkol, then Brest–Małaszewicze | The busiest corridor; Alashankou–Dostyk handled 8,165 trains in 2025 |
| Central (Mongolia) | Erenhot – Mongolia – Russia – Belarus – Poland | Erenhot / Zamyn-Üüd, then Brest | Suits north China origins |
| Eastern (Trans-Siberian) | Manzhouli or Suifenhe – Russia – Belarus – Poland | Manzhouli / Zabaikalsk, then Brest | Suits north-east China origins |
| Middle Corridor | Kazakhstan – Caspian ferry – Azerbaijan – Georgia – Turkey or Black Sea | Dostyk or Altynkol, then Akhalkalaki | Avoids Russia; Caspian crossing is the bottleneck |
Gauge changes: why the train stops twice
China and the EU use standard gauge track (1,435 mm), while Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus use broad gauge (1,520 mm). On the northern route containers are lifted onto new wagons at the Chinese–Kazakh border and again at Brest–Małaszewicze on the Belarus–Poland border, each transfer usually taking 1–3 days. Brest–Małaszewicze is estimated to handle 85–90% or more of China–Europe trains entering the EU, so congestion there sets the pace of the whole network. Other entry points include Sławków in southern Poland on the broad-gauge LHS line and Záhony in Hungary for some flows.

Transit time from factory to European door
- Pickup and export clearanceCargo is collected, loaded and declared for export in China at or near the departure hub.
- Departure from the hubThe block train leaves on its scheduled day. Missing the cut-off can mean waiting for the next train.
- First gauge changeAt Dostyk, Altynkol, Erenhot or Zabaikalsk containers move to broad-gauge wagons, usually 1–3 days.
- Transit through Kazakhstan, Russia and BelarusThe train runs under transit documents; no import clearance is done on the way.
- EU entry at Brest–MałaszewiczeSecond gauge change. The ICS2 entry summary must already be filed, at least 2 hours before arrival.
- Transit or clearanceGoods are cleared in Poland or moved under T1 to a terminal such as Duisburg or Hamburg.
- Import declaration and deliveryThe importer's broker files the declaration with its EORI, pays duty and import VAT, and the container is trucked to the door.
When rail beats sea, and when it does not
- About 12–18 days to Poland and 14–22 days to Germany.
- Best for inland China origins, high-value goods and cargo where a month saved frees working capital.
- Cost usually sits between sea and air; capacity is limited at border crossings.
- Northern routes transit Russia and Belarus, so goods and parties are screened.
- About 40–50 days to Rotterdam when carriers route via the Cape of Good Hope.
- Lowest cost per container for heavy, low-value or very large volumes.
- Best when the cargo is near a coastal port and the delivery date is flexible.
- About 14–25 days China to the EU, depending on route and border waits.
- Door to door with no gauge change; suits urgent part loads.
- EU sanctions bar Russian and Belarusian road carriers inside the EU, so cargo needs another carrier or a swap at the border.
Rail or sea? Pick the better mode
2026 status: demand, bottlenecks and sanctions
Demand is high in 2026 because sea routes to Europe remain disrupted and air is expensive. The weak point is the EU border: Poland closed its Belarus crossings for security reasons in September 2025, stranding trains, and reopening did not clear the backlog at once. Kazakhstan is expanding capacity at Dostyk and Altynkol. ICS2 Release 3 has covered rail since 1 September 2025, so every house shipment needs full shipper and consignee details, a 6-digit HS code and a precise description; vague entries such as parts or general cargo are rejected.
What drives the cost of rail freight
Rail rates change often, so our team quotes each shipment rather than publishing prices. These are the factors that move the number up or down.
- Origin hub and train schedule: some hubs run more frequent fixed-schedule trains than others.
- Container size and weight: 20-foot versus 40-foot, and heavy cargo close to wagon limits.
- FCL or LCL: shared containers cost more per CBM and add 2–4 days.
- Season: September to January is peak and fills trains fast.
- Border congestion at Dostyk, Altynkol and Brest–Małaszewicze, which can add waiting and storage.
- Route choice: the Middle Corridor adds a Caspian sea leg and port handling.
- Sea freight levels: when sea routes are disrupted, rail demand and rates rise.
- Empty returns: little cargo moves from Europe back to China, so operators must reposition containers.
- Destination services: T1 transit, customs clearance, duty, import VAT and last-mile trucking.
Usable space: 20GP ~25–28 CBM, 40GP ~55–58, 40HQ ~65–68.
How Golden Way handles China to Europe
Our running China to Turkey and Europe service uses the Middle Corridor and TIR trucks, with a typical published transit of 15–25 days. For shipments on the northern rail route through Russia and Belarus we check the goods and parties first and our team confirms whether we can offer it. From our Guangzhou warehouse we collect from several suppliers, count, photograph and consolidate cargo, check invoices and packing lists, and prepare the data your EU broker needs for ICS2 and the import declaration.

0/8Frequently asked questions
How long does rail freight from China to Europe take?
Typically about 12–18 days to Poland and 14–22 days to Duisburg or Hamburg, station to station. Add pickup, customs and delivery for door to door.
Is rail freight from China to Europe cheaper than sea?
Usually no. Rail generally costs more than sea and less than air. It pays off when saving three to four weeks matters, for example for high-value or time-sensitive goods.
Does China Europe rail still go through Russia in 2026?
Yes. Most trains still run through Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus into Poland. Goods and parties are screened for sanctions, and the Middle Corridor is the main alternative that avoids Russia.
Where do China–Europe trains enter the EU?
Mostly at Brest–Małaszewicze on the Belarus–Poland border, where containers change gauge. Other entry points include Sławków in Poland and Záhony in Hungary.
What documents do I need for rail freight to the EU?
A commercial invoice, packing list, CIM/SMGS rail waybill, the importer's EORI, a 6-digit HS code and precise description for ICS2, and any certificates such as CE documents.
Can I ship LCL by rail from China to Europe?
Yes. Rail LCL is available from major hubs and usually adds about 2–4 days for consolidation and deconsolidation.
