How to Pay Chinese Suppliers Safely: T/T, L/C, Escrow and Scam Checks

The safest way to pay a Chinese supplier is to send money only to the company account named on your contract, keep the deposit modest, and release the balance only after a passed pre-shipment inspection and against a copy of the bill of lading. For large or first orders, a letter of credit under UCP 600 gives bank-checked protection; for platform orders, Alibaba.com Trade Assurance helps only if you pay through the platform. Whatever the method, confirm bank details by phone, because changed account emails are the most common fraud.

Key points

  • Most China to Gulf orders use T/T: a deposit at order and the balance against a B/L copy.
  • Pay the balance after a passed pre-shipment inspection, not before.
  • Original or surrendered B/L release is your leverage; a sea waybill gives the seller no control after shipment.
  • Letters of credit protect large orders but documents must comply exactly with the credit.
  • Never act on an emailed change of bank details without calling a known number.

  • Simple bank wire, usually in USD.
  • Typical pattern: deposit at order, balance when the supplier sends a B/L copy.
  • Your protection comes from inspection before the balance and from B/L control.
  • Agree who pays bank charges: OUR, SHA or BEN.

T/T: deposits and balances done right

Telegraphic transfer is the default on China to Gulf trade. The usual risk sits with the buyer: the deposit is paid before production, and the balance before the goods reach you. You reduce that risk by tying each payment to a verifiable event. Keep the proforma invoice, the contract and the payment proof, because banks and customs may ask for them.

  1. Verify the supplierCheck the business licence and Unified Social Credit Code, and whether it is a real factory or a trader.
  2. Sign a clear PI or contractName the product specification, AQL levels, Incoterm with place, delivery date and payment milestones.
  3. Confirm the bank account by phoneThe beneficiary must be the company named on the contract, called on a number you already know.
  4. Pay the depositKeep it proportionate to the order and the supplier's track record; agree bank charges (OUR, SHA or BEN).
  5. Inspect before the balanceBook a pre-shipment inspection when at least 80% is packed, sampled under AQL.
  6. Ship and get the B/L copyThe supplier sends the B/L copy after loading; check consignee, goods and port details.
  7. Pay the balancePay only after a passed inspection and a correct B/L copy.
  8. Receive the releaseThe supplier surrenders the B/L (telex release) or couriers the originals; ask for the surrendered copy.

Letters of credit: protection with paperwork

Under a documentary credit your bank undertakes to pay the supplier when the documents comply with the credit. UCP 600 is the rulebook practically every L/C incorporates, applied with ISBP 821 banking practice. Because banks deal only in documents, add documents that prove what you care about, such as an inspection certificate from a named company.

  • Every credit is irrevocable, even if it does not say so.
  • Banks have a maximum of 5 banking days after presentation to decide whether documents comply.
  • Original transport documents must be presented no later than 21 calendar days after shipment, and before expiry.
  • The invoice description must correspond to the credit; data in other documents must not conflict.
  • If insurance is required, cover is at least 110% of the CIF or CIP value unless the credit says otherwise.
  • A refusal must list all discrepancies in a single notice; banks may ask you for a waiver.

Alibaba Trade Assurance and escrow

Trade Assurance is Alibaba.com's free order protection. It applies to qualifying orders from suppliers that support it, when the order and the payment go through the platform by online payment or wire transfer. Alibaba.com mediates disputes using the evidence both sides submit, so keep all communication on the platform. It is not an automatic full refund: claims are reviewed under platform rules and deadlines.

  • Covers product quality problems such as defects, wrong items or damage, and on-time delivery for qualifying products.
  • Refund claims must be opened within 30 days of delivery, or 60 days for Enterprise and Enterprise Pro buyers.
  • A supplier asking you to pay a separate bank account to get a discount is asking you to give up the protection.
  • Trade Assurance covers the purchase, not the freight: your cargo insurance and forwarder terms still matter.

Currency, bank charges and compliance

Most China to Gulf trade is invoiced in USD, and RMB settlement through banks and licensed providers is growing, especially for market purchases. The AED is pegged at about 3.6725 to the USD and the SAR at 3.75, so currency risk on USD invoices is small for UAE and Saudi buyers. Intermediary bank deductions are a frequent cause of short-payment disputes, so agree OUR, SHA or BEN on the wire. Banks screen every payment against sanctions lists and may ask for the contract, invoice or B/L. Golden Way complies with sanctions and export-control laws and does not advise on routing payments to avoid checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the safest way to pay a Chinese supplier?

For large or first orders, a letter of credit. Otherwise a modest deposit with the balance paid after a passed pre-shipment inspection and against a B/L copy, always to the company account on the contract.

How much deposit should I pay a Chinese supplier?

A 30% deposit with 70% against a B/L copy is the most common pattern. Keep the deposit proportionate to the order size and the supplier's track record.

Is Alibaba Trade Assurance safe?

It helps when the supplier supports it and you pay through Alibaba.com. It covers quality and on-time delivery for qualifying orders, with refund claims within 30 days of delivery. It is not an automatic refund.

Should I pay a Chinese supplier's personal account?

No. Pay only the company account named on the contract. Personal or third-party accounts raise fraud risk and can block the supplier's export rebate.

What is a telex release?

The shipper tells the carrier to release the cargo without original B/Ls. On balance-against-copy terms the supplier instructs it after receiving your payment.

How do I know if my supplier's bank details are fake?

Treat any change of account by email as suspicious. Call the supplier on a number you already have and check the beneficiary matches the contract name.

Can I pay Chinese suppliers in RMB from the UAE?

Yes, many banks and licensed payment providers offer RMB payments and RMB letters of credit. The payer should still be the buyer named on the contract.
