Key points
- LCL is charged per W/M: CBM or tonnes, whichever is greater, usually with a 1 CBM minimum.
- A 20GP often beats LCL from about 12–15 CBM; a 40GP holds about 55–58 CBM and a 40HQ about 65–68 CBM of cartons.
- LCL usually adds about 3–7 days and more handling; an FCL is sealed once at loading.
- Buying from several suppliers? Buyer's consolidation can turn many small lots into one container under one B/L.
- As of November 2026, UAE cargo is discharged outside the Strait of Hormuz and trucked in, for FCL and LCL alike.
FCL vs LCL at a glance
- You book the whole container: 20GP, 40GP or 40HQ
- Priced per container, whether it is full or half empty
- Loaded and sealed once, at the factory or at our warehouse
- No consolidation or unpacking at a CFS, so usually faster
- One consignee and one customs clearance
- You manage free time: demurrage and detention are charged per container
- You pay only for the space your cargo uses, by W/M
- W/M is CBM or tonnes, whichever is greater (1 CBM = 1,000 kg at sea)
- Minimum charge, usually 1 CBM, plus CFS fees at both ends
- Cargo must reach the CFS by an earlier cut-off, often 2–5 days before sailing
- Unpacked at the destination CFS; you collect after customs clearance
- More handling, and a hold on another shipper's lot can delay the whole box
| Factor | FCL | LCL |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing basis | Per container, plus per-container charges | Per W/M, plus per-W/M or per-shipment charges |
| Best volume range | From about 12–15 CBM upward | About 1–12 CBM |
| Transit time | Base sailing time | Base time plus about 3–7 days |
| Origin cut-off | CY cut-off at the terminal | CFS cut-off, often 2–5 days before ETD |
| Handling | Loaded once, sealed, opened by you | Loaded at origin CFS, unpacked at destination CFS |
| Damage risk | Lower | Higher; strong cartons and pallets recommended |
| Customs | Only your own clearance | The box is released after every lot clears; one hold can delay all |
| Free time | Demurrage and detention per container | CFS storage charges after the free days |
Where the break-even sits
The break-even is the volume at which one container costs the same as the LCL space you would otherwise pay for. Take the all-in FCL price door to door (ocean freight, surcharges, terminal handling at both ends, documents, delivery order and trucking) and divide it by the all-in LCL cost per W/M (ocean freight plus CFS fees at origin and destination and any per-W/M delivery charges). If a 20GP all-in costs the same as 13 W/M of LCL, your break-even is 13 CBM: below it LCL is cheaper, above it the container wins. On China–Gulf trades it usually falls around 12–15 CBM for a 20GP, but it moves with rates every week. Check your W/M first with the calculator below: dense cargo is charged by weight, which pulls the break-even down.
Usable space: 20GP ~25–28 CBM, 40GP ~55–58, 40HQ ~65–68.
| Your cargo | Usually the best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 12 CBM | LCL | You pay only for your W/M; a container would travel part-empty |
| About 12–15 CBM | Compare both | The break-even zone; urgency, fragility and weight decide |
| About 15–28 CBM | 20GP | About 25–28 CBM of cartons fit in practice |
| About 28–58 CBM | 40GP | About 55–58 CBM usable |
| Up to about 68 CBM | 40HQ | About 65–68 CBM usable, with 30 cm more height than a 40GP |
| Heavy goods such as tiles, steel or stone | Often a 20GP | The box reaches its payload limit before it is full |
Costs: what you pay under each option
- FCL: ocean freight per container, plus surcharges such as bunker, low-sulphur and, in 2026, emergency or war-risk surcharges
- FCL: terminal handling at origin and destination, B/L documentation, seal and delivery order fees, per container or per B/L
- FCL: trucking per container, and demurrage or detention if the box is kept beyond free time
- LCL: ocean freight per W/M with a minimum, usually 1 CBM
- LCL: origin CFS receiving and loading fees and destination CFS unpacking fees, usually per W/M
- LCL: documentation, delivery order and local delivery, per shipment or per W/M
- Both: customs clearance, plus 5% UAE duty and 5% VAT, which do not change with the mode
LCL carries more fixed charges, so 1–3 CBM shipments can cost a lot per cubic metre. Never compare an FCL ocean rate with an LCL ocean rate alone; compare door-to-door totals with every charge listed. Our team quotes both options within one working day.
Transit time and the 2026 routing
FCL is normally the faster option. LCL cargo has to reach the CFS by an earlier cut-off, waits for the box to be consolidated, and is unpacked at a destination CFS before you can collect it, which typically adds about 3–7 days. As of November 2026 there is a further factor for the UAE: the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to normal container shipping since 28 February 2026. We route UAE cargo by sea to Khor Fakkan and then by bonded truck to Jebel Ali, with a typical door-to-door time of 18–30 days. Our team confirms the current routing and transit for every booking.
Risk: damage, delays and shared boxes
An FCL is loaded once, closed with a high-security bolt seal and normally opened only by you or customs, so handling damage and loss are less likely. LCL cargo is handled at least twice more, at the origin and destination CFS, and shares the box with other shippers' goods. If customs holds one lot for inspection, the whole container can wait. For LCL, use strong export cartons, palletise where possible (wooden pallets need ISPM 15 heat treatment and marking), mark every carton on two sides and insure the cargo. For FCL the risk moves to loading: block and brace the goods, spread the weight evenly and declare an accurate VGM, because under SOLAS a container without a verified gross mass will not be loaded on the ship.
Consolidation: the middle route
If your order comes from several Chinese suppliers, with buyer's consolidation our Guangzhou warehouse receives everything for you and loads one container under one B/L, which usually costs less per CBM than several separate LCL shipments.
- Send the entry noticeEach supplier receives a warehouse entry notice with the address, your shipping mark and the delivery deadline.
- Suppliers deliverEach supplier delivers with its invoice and packing list before the agreed cut-off.
- Count and checkWe count, measure and photograph the cartons and report any damage or shortage to you.
- Label and palletiseCartons carry your mark and are palletised where needed, so they stay together.
- Export clearanceEach supplier can declare its own goods, which it needs for its export VAT rebate, or one declaration covers the box.
- Load one containerEverything is loaded, braced and sealed into one 20GP, 40GP or 40HQ, with photos at each stage.
- One B/L, one clearanceYou receive one bill of lading and clear customs once at destination.

FCL or LCL?
Frequently asked questions
Is LCL cheaper than FCL?
For small volumes, yes. Below roughly 12 CBM LCL usually costs less; from about 12–15 CBM a 20GP is often cheaper. Compare door-to-door quotes, because rates change weekly.
How many CBM make a full container worth it?
Usually from about 12–15 CBM for a 20GP. Divide the FCL all-in price by the LCL all-in cost per W/M to find your own break-even.
What is the minimum for LCL shipping?
Most consolidators charge a minimum of 1 CBM (1 W/M), plus fixed fees such as documentation and the delivery order.
How much longer does LCL take than FCL?
Typically about 3–7 days more, because of the earlier CFS cut-off, consolidation, and unpacking at the destination CFS.
Can I book FCL if my container is not full?
Yes. You pay for the whole container either way. Fill the empty space with dunnage or airbags so the cargo cannot move.
Can LCL be delivered to my door?
Yes. After unpacking and clearance the cargo is trucked to you. Ask for a door-to-door quote so CFS and delivery fees are included.
Are FCL and LCL to Dubai running during the Hormuz closure?
Yes. As of November 2026 our China–UAE service runs by sea to Khor Fakkan and bonded truck to Jebel Ali, typically 18–30 days door to door. Our team confirms the routing for each booking.
